Violence Against Creation

"The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life." Pope Francis, Laudato Si, n 2.

Pope Francis sees violence against creation as a reflection of human sinfulness. What are some of the ways in which our sinfulness can harm or cause sickness in the rest of creation? Do you think of your attitude towards creation as violent?

In one of many references to the heart, Pope Francis links the violence present in our hearts to sin. He calls us to a change of heart, to an ecological conversion, in which we turn away from sin and violence against creation. How does the plight of creation touch your heart? How might it touch the Heart of God?
